A Short History of Haliimaile Softball League
The Haliimaile Softball league was originaly started in 1978 and was
called the East Maui Restaurant Softball League. The first season had four
teams - Inter Continental Hotel, Pizza Factory, Longhis and Prime Rib House.
Games where on Saturday and we played at Eddie Tam field in Makawao. The
league was Co-Ed the first year mostly because there were a limited amount of
players. In the early 80's we played at other fields including Paukakalo
Hawaiian Home field, Kahului School field and Kalama field in Kihei.
We never really had a set area to play at so we made a request to the
Parks and Rec dept. and they said Haliimaile field was available but it needs
some work. Well, they were right! It was a beautiful location but the field
had been neglected and basically looked like a cow pasture. The only backstop
was a 10 x 10 fenced area behind home plate. It had an outfield fence at a
desirable distance. After many work days on the field we managed to get it in
playable shape and the rest is History! We have 7 teams playing at the
present time and it has become a lifestyle for a lot of us and a family
tradition. See you there.
